Heian Godan - Step by Step

This is a very rough guide to the 5th Kyu (Purple Belt) Kata, Heian Godan.

The comments below the picture are written by James Strauch and are some of the things that he works on while doing the Kata. We can all learn things from eachother, so please feel free to send us your comments to go with Heian Godan along with your name, grade and club and we will put them up here. With your help, we will get a wide range of tips and hints and our Karate can only get better

Yoi, no fidgeting or looking around, concentrate on what you are doing, and not on everybody else

remember, you must have a good stance and a straight back, dont rush through the block, but make it fast and hard.

pull that reaction arm right back, making sure the arm has a 90 degree bend at the elbow.

with the back leg, nice and slow this is time to show off with the technique, keep the knees slightly bent.

and the reaccuring sequence, dont rush through it and make silly mistakes, make every technique count.

again nice and slow, this can be done showly but with kime ( power ).

explode into this one, dont forgett about your stance.

stepping forward into a deep front stance, keeping knuckles closed tight with the block.

pull the stance back slightly, and pull your arms back hard into your stomach.

again an x-block but this time hands open and upwards as if catching a jodan tsuki punch.

twisting the hands down and back, do not move ur lower body at all

Half Way Move
this is a pushing punch while moving forward

KIAI!
at the same time you land your front stance and punck a hard and fast oi-tsuki.

going backwards in a low kiba dachi with gedan barai. remember to look in the direction you are going.

nice and slow but with kimei, the wrist should twist at the end of the technique, as if grabing the back of someones neck.

Half Way Move
kick the palm of the hand and at the same time you land, you enpi the palm of the hand you just kicked.

bringing your feet togeather without loosing ballance

push the arms straight up, changing the feet into a short cat stance, with a slight pause.

Half Way Move
- now, without a step, spring upwards bringing your knees to your chest and hands pulled back to the waist in preperation for the landing. ( it is possable! )

KIAI!
and landing double block, with the knees bent to absorb some of the impact. your feet should land togeather!!

stepping to the side, front stance morote uke - power with a good stance!

Half Way Move
making the preperation for the block.

strike down, hard and cover your neck with the palm of the hand.

grabbing the opponents privates, and ripping them off into the back hand.

pulling your legs back with a slight pause.

Half Way Move
and the same sequence again

if you pause for a slight second the techniques look a lot better

make sure the last technique here is a good one. nice long back stance, keeping your arms in a nice straight line.

Yame.
REMEMBER - yame, this is still being judged, dont fidget or look around theres plenty of time for that later.
