Heian Sandan - Step by Step

This is a very rough guide to the 7th Kyu (Yellow Belt) Kata, Heian Sandan. The little black compass symbols show where the "front" "side" and "back" directions are and the red arrow points in the direction your head should be facing in relation to the front.

The comments below the picture are written by James Strauch and are some of the things that he works on while doing the Kata. We can all learn things from eachother, so please feel free to send us your comments to go with Heian Sandan along with your name, grade and club and we will put them up here. With your help, we will get a wide range of tips and hints and our Karate can only get better!

yo-oe, is the first start of the kata, treat this as your first technique

keep that reaction arm pulled back, and show off with a deep back stance

remember these are two blocks! no floppy arms here

and same the other side, keep that back knee bent!

with the double blocks keeping your knees slightly bent will help you with your balance

good preperation for the morote uke, ram them out the way with this one

in a good front stance, you are trying to stick your hand through them, plenty of power with this technique

twist your arm, you are trying to break someones grip.

you want to try and keep your head at the same height throughout this technique

and a powerfull oi-tsuki punch

nice and slow this is where u can get ur breath back a little.

big and powerfull u want to put your foor through the floow with this technique

keep the knee high through this and last minute twist the hips with the stamp

remember u block with your elbow first! , then the uraken uchi. keep your stance nice and low

step using your leading hand to push the opponent away

and land in a low front stance, with a powerfull oi-tsuki chudan punch.

back leg first!!! then the front leg.

keep the stance nice and low, not too long though

with a shuffle remember this is the last stance so make it a good one! the technique is a empi-uchi so make sure the arm comes across with power not just speed!.

yamae - remember this is the last move of the kata, no fidgeting, you are judged on this in competitions! it could make the differance.
